Is ibogaine legal in New York?
Ibogaine is a psychoactive substance derived primarily from the West African iboga shrub. Under federal law, it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. That legal status makes ibogaine treatment illegal for medical use in New York and throughout the United States.
There are no licensed facility options authorized to administer ibogaine treatment in New York State. A service that offers coaching, screening, or referrals in New York is not thereby authorized to provide the drug. The DEA’s federal drug scheduling overview explains why Schedule I status creates a major barrier to ordinary medical access.
People sometimes describe a legal grey area, but a controlled substance does not become lawful because it is marketed as plant medicine, a research chemical, or a wellness product. The legal status is one reason New York residents may hear about underground clinics or travel arrangements rather than local clinical settings.
Some individuals seek ibogaine treatment by traveling to Mexico, Canada, or other jurisdictions with different drug policy. A page describing New York-focused ibogaine travel questions should not be read as proof that treatment is legal locally. International clinics operate under different rules, standards, and oversight.
